Neutropenia

It is the decline in numbers of granulocytes in the blood, when severe is called agranulocytosis, the number of neutrophils drops below 500 cells / ul

People with this condition are susceptible to bacterial and fungal infections.

PATHOGENY

The pathogenesis of neutropenia can be divided into 2 categories:

Decreased production of granulocitos.- this is due to the decrease in the granulopoyesis often caused by:

- Bone marrow failure (aplastic anemia).
- Extensive bone replacement by a tumor (leukemia).
- Chemotherapy oncologica.

But it can also result:

- Use of drugs.
- Neoplastic proliferation of lymphocytes T.

Increased destruction of granulocitos.-

- Autoimmune Mechanism (may be caused by the consumption of certain drugs).
- Infections (bacterial, fungal or rikettsias), are used in larger quantities.
- Splenomegaly (may cause kidnapping and accelerate the destruction of neutrophils).
