Boerhaave syndrome

Boerhaave syndrome is thought to be due to the absence of gastroesophageal muscle relaxation, which determines that the reflux of gastric contents exceed the entry of the stomach (cardia), causing dilations tearing of the esophageal wall. Patients often consult for hematemesis. This condition is extremely graver than Mallory Weiss syndrome .

Boerhaave syndrome is characterized by:

- Transmural esophageal tears
- Mediastinistis
- It is less frequent
